The S&M Landscape Lighting Difference

October 15, 2019

More and more, as we visit with New Jersey homeowners to discuss designing and installing a low-voltage lighting system, we are told that they have already met with, or plan to meet with other contractors.

That is both a good thing and a bad thing. Let’s start with the good.

The economy has improved drastically in the past ten-years and homeowners in New Jersey are obviously willing to invest in the security and ambiance that a landscape lighting system provides. The reason there is more competition today than there was when we started our company in 2007, is because there is more work and that work has bred more companies.

Competition drives innovation in verticals across the globe, but it also puts stress on a marketplace and can result in confusion for consumers. What do I mean by that?

Apples and oranges.

Our business is and has been predicated on providing our clients with a professional and commercial grade product, with a lifetime warranty and world-class service. We attend trade-shows, hire career-minded employees, invest heavily in training, inventory and tools and we never take any shortcuts or prioritize profit over performance.

That means that we will never be competitive in a bid situation that pits our five-star rated design, install and service company with a handy-man or landscaper that is low-bidding a homeowner for inferior materials, work and vision. It just is what it is.

The benefit to our company with the increase in low-ball bidders, is that the difference between our company’s experience, design, products and professionalism is often obvious from as early as the first meeting.

Sometimes homeowners choose a contractor strictly for budgetary reasons and that is totally fine, but it rarely fails that we get a call to fix a system we did not install because the company that low-balled the proposal also used inferior products as well as installation methods and now won’t answer the phone or fix the system they installed.

These same homeowners make up a large part of our clientele some just a few years after their first system was installed and stopped working.

A properly designed and installed outdoor lighting system is a sizable and important investment for New Jersey homeowners and the difference between S&M Landscape Lighting and the low-bid contractors and landscapers is night and day.
